So I think I'm going to suck it up and park outside and let the GTI stay in the garage until I can get a suitable covering for it on the side of my garage. I'm going to be arranging with Ben to have it delivered this week some time from Rennen Schnell, where it currently sits.

I have no idea what I'm getting myself into, but I can't wait to wrench on this little car and get her up and running. YEAH!

Good call, but I'm actually going to build a lean-to roof off the side of my garage once it warms up a bit. I've got a bunch of cedar planks left over from my fence and they'd make great shingles. Until then I'll suck it up and keep the Jetta out in the cold.

So I'm getting the GTI delivered tomorrow. I suppose I'll bump the thread then!

So, as far as I know to turn it into a driver I've got to hook up the fuel and brake lines and connect the exhaust. Not sure what else there is to do.

My plan is to get it running good and then get to the rust. My buddy Zach just happens to have the rear passenger fender wheel arch panels I need to repair that, and very recently did the same frame rail repair that I need on his friend's MK1. So I think I'm going to learn how to weld.

Other than that I'm not sure -- I haven't had time to start making a longer list.

It's been ages since I updated this thread, but I figure I probably ought to do so...

So I really lost interest in this project with the bus and the summer and all that. Shame, because I really would like to drive a MK1 again. Or sell it and pick up another aircooled project, but who knows. Probably have to get it running to sell it for anything close to what I want, and once I have it running, I'll probably just want to drive the thing.

Now that I'm driving Roofus without too many issues, I have some time I can put into the GTI...

So to complete the rear brake disc swap I needed the larger diameter master cylinder and a second proportioning valve from a 16v Scirocco. I kind of put that part of the project on hold because finishing the fuel system is more important than putting different brakes on... However, I have a lead on the parts I need, so I may do that at the same time, seeing as I already need to replace the brake lines.

The big issue though has been the fuel system. It needed more than just "lines", as I was told, but whatevs. I bought an aftermarket pump and some fittings at a friend's suggestion, but I'm kind of an idiot when it comes to engineering my own fuel system. I'd rather just have the OEM parts, ya know? Plus, with an OEM replacement, I don't have to hack the car to bits which will not hurt the inevitable appreciation of a first-year GTI. To that end, the same lead I have on the brake parts also has a good fuel system that I am going to take off. Hopefully that means I can actually get the GTI running before winter!

Stay tuned...
